MEETINGS & DEMONSTRATIONS

Richardson Civic Art Society meets the third Tuesday of each month. Each month we have various artists demos. Our next regular meeting is November 18th. Our demo artist for November is Tina Bohlman who will demonstrate her plein air watercolor techniques.

Tina says :“I’ve been an artist all my life. Drawing with pencil and crayon as a child, I don't remember learning the skill....the ability has just always been there."

A Texas native, Tina Bohlman has used the state in which she was raised as both the inspiration and the canvas for her art. Mostly a self-taught artist, Bohlman works primarily in watercolor and occasionally in oil to create her breathtaking plein air paintings and brilliant rural landscapes. She cultivated her natural artistic talent and her eye for beauty with great dedication and an insatiable desire to learn the techniques and history of the art. Bohlman has supplemented her independent study with workshops with some of the best artists in the field, including Jan Kuntz, Tom Lynch, Irving Shapiro and Jill Carver.

This has served her well because as she describes, watercolor is a challenging medium. A veteran of numerous competition plein air and “quick draw” events annually, including, Plein Air Southwest–Outdoor Painters Society, Sedona Plein Air Festival-Sedona, Arizona, and Paint The Parks-Estes Park, Colorado, she prefers plein air rather than working in the studio.

We have several Art Shows each season.

It all starts with our Membership Show in the Fall. Those members wanting to display their 2D work and compete for prizes are eligible to enter. Paintings hang in the 2nd Floor Gallery of the Richardson Public Library. A judge will select winning entries and awards which are handed out at the monthly meeting. The prospectus explains rules and guidelines for hanging. Most work is for sale and is a great opportunity to purchase local art.

In the Winter, our Young People’s Scholarship Show hangs in the 2nd Floor Gallery with representation from our talented Richardson high school students competing for cash awards.

Following the Young People’s Show is the Rosemary Cheney Memorial Art Show. This showcases the RISD Elementary students. Forty-one schools send their best art to be displayed in the Library’s 2nd Floor Gallery, with the show traveling to the RISD Professional Building for more viewing by the public.

The 50+ Show in the Spring gives “seasoned” artists a chance to display and compete for prize money and awards. This show is open to any 2D artists in the surrounding communities who are also over age 50. Sales of the artwork are encouraged. This is a great venue to purchase art pieces locally. The monthly meeting after the show hangs will present awards and prizes chosen by our judge. See the prospectus for rules and guidelines.

Our premier show is the Regional Juried Art Exhibition which is displayed at the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts. This juried show is open to qualified amateur and professional Texas artists. Prize awards totaling over $6900.00 in cash and merchandise are presented at a reception honoring entrants and their families and friends. Refreshments and music are part of the festivities. Sales of the artwork are encouraged by patrons.

Our final show is a casual display of any artwork that members wish to hang in the 2nd Floor Gallery during the summer months. We call this our Simply Summer Show and Sale.

See below for details about any of our shows. To see photos from previous shows, go to the Archives page.
