MEETINGS & DEMONSTRATIONS

Our next meeting is November 21st. The November demo Artist is Pete Quaid, demonstrating his techniques in Oil.

I’ve been painting for 30 years.  As a young man I started my own business contracting the painting of billboards. After gathering some years of experience, I signed a contract with a Dallas company and painted their pictorial work in a studio environment for eight years.

With the advent of large printers, I chose to transfer my skills to painting murals.  My clients have included PepsiCo, GE, Southwest Airlines, Landry’s (Saltgrass, Rainforest), Simon Properties and many schools and restaurants.   I feel fortunate that I’ve been able to support myself with a paintbrush for over 30 years.

For the most part, I am self taught.  However, I’m grateful to all of the artists whose work I’ve studied because they have continued my education. In particular, Connie Erickson has provided her honest critique and her encouragement in my pursuit of fine art.  Beauty inspires me; training the eye to see color, values and design while pursuing the beauty that light reveals is a lifelong adventure.  John Pototschnik, Andrew Wages and Kaye Franklin have shaped my understanding of color. Ann is living life as fully and well as she knows how.  For Ann, the joy of painting is in the process (journey) and not the destination.  Growth in life and art is the most exciting thing she can think of.  She believes you must be willing to risk and to be at home in your own skin.  For her, it’s fun to be slightly (??) eccentric (and she plays that to the hilt) by painting in a 12 by 12 foot treehouse, and by cooking for 6 others on a 51ft. sailboat in the Grenadine Islands, driving a van of 8 women artists in Guatemala, backpacking in Scotland and England, riding up the Tetons on horseback from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, tenting for a week, riding a 20-year-old mule around Texas while following a wagon train for 2 weeks, backpacking with her daughter in the Rockies for several days, painting and drawing in Bali, Italy, San Miquel de Allende, Mexico, Greece, France (Chateau du Soudan), Habitat for Humanity in Belize, fishing for King Salmon in Sitka, Alaska, painting in Argentina, and the most precarious of all, decided to earn her livelihood as an artist.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

Art is either plagiarism or revolution. - Paul Gauguin 1848-1903

Every time I paint a portrait, I lose a friend. - John Singer Sargent
